Description
A trail head of one of the Mountain to Sea hiking trails in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. This picture was taken at sunrise on the Blue Ridge Parkway. 0383-90
The MST (Mountain to Sea) trails are unique to North Carolina. They are a series of many well-maintained hiking and backpacking trails with the eventual goal of running from the western-most mountains (Great Smokey Mountains) to the Atlantic Ocean on the Outer Banks. As of 2014, almost 700 miles of trails have been completed with the eventual goal being around 1,300.
The trails are built and regularly maintained mostly by volunteers. At this trail head in the Doughton Park area on the Blue Ridge Parkway, a hiker has decorated the MST trail marker by planting wildflowers and adding a little frog statue.
