Blue Fairy Orchids
Pheladenia deformis, commonly known as blue fairy orchid or blue beard is the only species of the flowering plant genus Pheladenia in the orchid family, Orchidaceae and is endemic to Australia. It was originally named as Caladenia deformis and has since had several name changes.

Tuberous, clump-forming perennial, herb, to 0.15 m high. Fl. blue-violet, May to Sep. Grey, yellow or red sand, sandy loam, gravel, granite, laterite. Outcrops, swamp margins, winter-wet sites.

This orchid has had a confusing history. Originally classified as Caladenia deformis, it was then placed into the then new genus Cyanicula with a number of other orchids that were also originally in Caladenia. Recently, new research including DNA work has resulted in this orchid being placed in a genus of its own. It is very common and widespread across the south west. One of its favoured habitats is on and around granite outcrops.

Found in Beverley, Western Australia in Spring
